JATRA is committed to a sustainable environment and has policies and procedures in place to ensure it is environmentally responsible. For example:
• All wastewater is treated before being discharge to remove any fat
and sediments
• Most of JATRA’s energy needs are met by sustainable
hydro-electricity. One of the reasons the plant is located in Christchurch
is to take advantage of an infinite supply of hydro-electricity. The burning
of fossil fuels is restricted as much as possible.
• All waste materials are recycled, with waste food and plant products converted into compost and used to enhance future plant growth through a vertically integrated ornamental plant production facility.
• Where possible natural products and ingredients are used in all processes.
• GM products are not used
JATRA contributes to the local economy by providing employment for some 50 staff, while the goods and services that are used provide three times as many jobs.
Over the next 10 years, it is expected that JATRA will create many more employment opportunities.
In addition, JATRA supports local staff and community initiatives, including
the Life Education Trust and the Police Guild.
